No supleix la necessitat de consultar la normativa aprovada i publicada per l'organisme competent.El projecte suposa una sistematització i harmonització dels plans i instruments urbanístics, la creació d'una àmplia base de dades dels seus paràmetres (amb un diccionari únic de conceptes urbanístics), la recopilació i georreferenciació dels plànols d'ordenació, la digitalització d'aquests, així com la creació de tot el sistema d'informació geogràfica i del visualitzador web de mapes per proporcionar l'accés als plànols i documentació en vigor o la creació de fitxes urbanístiques informatives.Del municipi d'Eivissa, a causa de l’anul·lació del PGOU de 2009 i pendent d'incorporar al MUIB l'aprovació definitiva de la nova Revisió del Pla General Municipal, el MUIB només mostra alguns planejaments, plans parcials i modificacions. D'alguns municipis, com Palma o Andratx, encara no s'ha incorporat al MUIB el planejament més recent aprovat. Cal advertir que, tot i que el visualitzador mostra una cartografia que és una fusió del planejament municipal i territorial, les categories del sòl rústic (incloses les àrees de transició, AT) i fitxes d'informació urbanística generades pel MUIB poden no tenir en compte el planejament territorial (especialment els plans territorials insulars i les seves darreres modificacions), per la qual cosa la informació pot estar parcial o totalment derogada per aquests planejaments superiors, especialment en rústic. La capa de CATEGORIES en ciertos casos sólo muestra las categorías definidas por el planeamiento municipal, siendo necesario superponer el resto de capas de ordenación y protección del suelo rústico de los Planes Territoriales, Espacios Naturales Protegidos, etc. para conocer exactamente el tipo de suelo rústico.
